‘Terrorists will have to face the consequences’, India slams Pakistan at the UN

India gives a stern response to Pakistan over terrorism on the United Nations stage. New Delhi issued a direct response to the series of anti-India remarks made by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Sharif’s address had touched upon “Operation Sindoor” and the Indus Waters Treaty, and he leveled multiple allegations against India. Following this, Petal Gehlot, First Secretary of India’s Permanent Mission, delivered a statement on behalf of India at the UN on Saturday.

Gehlot described Sharif’s remarks as ‘bizarre’ and raised counter-questions regarding Pakistan’s role concerning terrorism. He pointed out that Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks, had taken refuge in Pakistan, noting that he had been hiding right under the nose of the Pakistani military. Gehlot also clearly articulated India’s stance on terrorism, stating that terrorists would not be allowed to escape or survive by going into hiding and that India would exercise its right to self-defense. Addressing Pakistan, he warned that the country would have to face the consequences of abetting terrorist activities.

Earlier on Friday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had also spoken out regarding Pakistan at the United Nations. A Pakistani journalist questioned him about terrorism in South Asia. In response, Jaishankar stated that he did not have the answer to that question; only Pakistani ministers could say how much longer they would continue to support terrorism. He then questioned Pakistan’s role in even stronger terms.
