In an explosive interview to one of Bangladesh’s leading daily newspapers President Md. Sahabuddin said he was kept captive in presidential palace for one and half year more by Chief Executive of Interim Government Md. Yunus. Answering to question President said “there are many conspiracies going on with me.There have been many attempts to destroy the peace and order of the country forever and to create a constitutional vacum”.

President added, “in the last one and half year I was not consulted in any decision. But I stood firm. That’s why none of the plots succeeded. In particular, numerous plots to overthrow the President by unconstitutional means have failed.”

President narrated the horrific night of 22 October of 2024 when Bangabhavan (President’s House) was gheraoed by a mob in different name. Then armed forces provided security. One guy jumped the barbed wire fence. Then came a sound of grenade hit. He fell down and asked photographer to take picture, as if he was hurt. This was a plan to blackmail me. That night was horrible. As those mob looted Ganabhaban (House of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina), wanted to loot President’s House also. Actually they wanted President to resign.

When asked about the role of BNP, President said “top leadership of BNP was my side. Even I found BNP Chairperson Tareq Rahaman was with me. They wanted continuity of the Constitution.” Without mentioning name of Jamaet Islami President hinted they wanted to remove him. “Interim government wanted to replace me by bringing in former Chief Justice in an unconstitutional manner. But fortunately Chief Justice declined the offer. Moreover I had the support of three Armed Forces. It’s also strange that Chief Advisor Yunus didn’t enquire about me.

President made a direct complaint against Prof. Yunus that he did not go by the Constitution and ignored that. He travelled so many countries but never informed me. Even invitation came from two countries to visit. Yunus didn’t allow. On the contrary sent me a draft to sign below that I am busy with state work. I protested to foreign affairs ministry that they should not do like that. Even they didn’t allow to address university convocation . Even they curtailed my press wing.
