About the Book
Darling Earth, is the translation of Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay’s acclaimed novel Parthibo. It’s the result of years of careful engagement of the translator Prasenjit Saha with the author Mr. Sirsendu Mukhopadhyay.
Darling Earth is a thoughtful and moving novel that reflects on the meaning of life, responsibility, and our relationship with the world we inhabit. Set in the early 1990s, the story moves between a remote village near Kolkata and the city itself, tracing the emotional journey of a divided family. At its centre is Krishnajiban, a celebrated environmentalist who has escaped village poverty but remains haunted by guilt for the family he left behind. As past and present intertwine, the novel draws a powerful connection between environmental destruction and the moral erosion of human values. Rooted in local life yet universal in spirit, Darling Earth is a poignant reminder that ethics matter, relationships endure, and the Earth is the only home we must learn to cherish and protect.
